Zimbabweans in Namibia asked to pay to see President Mnangagwa

REUTERS/Philimon Bulawayo Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa officiates at the swearing in ceremony for his cabinet at State House in Harare, Zimbabwe December 4, 2017. REUTERSZimbabweans living in Namibia have expressed shock and disappointment at their embassy for requiring ordinary local and Zimbabwean citizens to pay $16 in order to see visiting President Mnangagwa, local online website, the Villager reports.According to The Villager, it is widely known that the embassy is broke and is using President Mnangagwa’s visit to make money. The embassy had booked more than 300 seats at Safari hotel where Mnangagwa was set to address people.A number of attendees were disappointed with some saying that despite having paid, they were not able to get access to the venue.“We were made to pay N$200 but some of us have been barred. Others couldn’t come and we asked if we can get in on their behalf and they refused. When we are supposed to vote we do not pay, but for me to see my president I have to pay. This is embarrassing,” said one irate Zimbabwean.President Emmerson Mnangagwa is visiting his Namibian counterpart, Hage Geingob, before heading to Zambia. It’s Mnangagwa’s third trip since taking office late last year. The two leaders are expected to discuss political developments in Zimbabwe.Mnangagwa’s strategy appears to be meeting with his neighbours first, to appraise them on the dramatic developments in Zimbabwe that led to his ascendancy.“Obviously you realize there could be more sympathisers to the Mugabe regime who need explanation, who need a stand point going forward, who need assurance that the removal of President Robert Mugabe was meant for the better of Zimbabwe and not necessarily a victory for one of the political factions in ZANU-PF.” Alexander Rusero, a political commentator said. The Zimbabwean president is also using the whirlwind regional tour to cement his position ahead of his first African Union summit later this month. The 15-member Southern African Development Community has been an influential player in Zimbabwean politics – supporting the country during many long years of international isolation and brokering a government of national unity after the disputed 2008 elections.“You look at 2000 onwards its only SADC which stood by Zimbabwe and President Mnangagwa is really convinced that once he receives legitimacy and acceptance art regional level then the region can be used as a springboard to the international community.” Rusero added.During his inauguration, Mnangagwa pledged to re-engage with the international community. The success of that process hinges on the conduct of elections due this year, which Mnangagwa has said will be free and fair. Close attention is also being paid to implementation of reforms meant to bring about economic recovery.“It could come if the new political dispensation is sincere with what it is saying; if the political dispensation desists from speechifying and indulges more in action.” Rusero said.Later this month, Mnangagwa will travel further afield to the World Economic Forum in Davos , the first time Zimbabwe will have presidential representation at the global summit.last_img read more

Long drives galore, but putting the key

first_imgBest of the day was Jeff Wylie (7), just getting the better of Jonathan Pratt (10) on count back 16/14 after both signed for 34 points.  Near pins were spread around between Paddy, Jonathan & K.Thursday, Jan. 30, Bangpakong – StablefordThursday was a long drive, longer than normal anyway, before we got to the course at Bangpakong Riverside.  The course is in super condition currently, with fairways offering perfect lies, if you can manage to keep it on the straight & not so narrow. While I have difficulty with describing any course as “easy”, even at 6600 yards from the white tees, Bangpakong is certainly one of the more open, forgiving courses available to us.  This is not to say that it does not offer up its challenges, especially the par 3s which have some length and hazards to negotiate. With no Jonathan today, as he is visiting the UK, it was left to Willem Lasonder (20) to challenge Jeff for the prizes.  After good front 9s, both slipped a little on the back to sign for 36 & 38 points respectively.  George Gamble (24) was in the hunt, but a late stumble saw him relegated to equal third with Paddy, who even with a couple of “wipes” on the back 9 was not far away.Near pins went to Neil & Jeff.Note:  Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along.  Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days.  As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option.  Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries.  Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing! PSC golf from Siam Country ResortTuesday, Jan. 28, The Emerald – StablefordTuesday was a visit to Emerald where we played from the white tees, which were effectively yellow as they had not been replaced following a junior tournament.  Even at the normal whites at 6,024 yards, Emerald is amongst the shortest courses in the area, with some allowance for the up & down terrain.   The course was in generally good order, but is starting to show signs from the recent lack of rain of fairways being very firm, good for distance if you can keep it straight though.  Greens were putting truly, but hard to be offensive with downhill putts, as they had a tendency to get away if not careful.Jonathan Pratt – style personified. last_img read more

Jets sign former Redskins WR Terrelle Pryor

first_imgThis 2017 file photo of Terrelle Pryor Sr. of the Washington Redskins NFL football team. (AP Photo/File)NEW YORK (AP) — Terrelle Pryor is hoping for a Big-Apple bounce-back with the Jets. The former Washington wide receiver signed with New York after one disappointing season with the Redskins. The Jets announced the signing Sunday. Terms of the deal, which were agreed to on Thursday night, were not immediately known.Pryor had free agent visits with both New York and Seattle, and also had interest from Cleveland, before he agreed to sign with the Jets.“I’m so happy to be a part of this organization and this team, this young team,” Pryor said in a video posted on the team’s Twitter page . “I’m excited. It’s time to get to work. Jet up!”Pryor, who turns 29 in June, gives the Jets some depth at wide receiver, where they also have Jermaine Kearse, Quincy Enunwa and Robby Anderson, along with second-year pros Chad Hansen and ArDarius Stewart.Anderson’s status is uncertain, however, after he was arrested in Florida in January on several charges, including threatening a police officer’s family and saying he would rape the officer’s wife. He was also arrested last May and charged with resisting arrest after sparring with officials who asked him to leave a Miami music festival. His hearing has been postponed until August.“I am really hopeful Robby will put this thing behind him and be the kind of all-around person that will make people proud to wear (his) No. 11 jersey,” Jets acting owner Christopher Johnson said Sunday at the NFL meetings.“I haven’t talked with the coaches about Robby. I honestly think he is remorseful and trying to get himself in a better place. I believe him.”Pryor signed a one-year, $6 million deal with Washington last year after having a breakout season with Cleveland in 2016, when he had 77 catches for 1,007 yards and four touchdowns in his first year as a full-time wide receiver. He was being counted on to replace the departed receiving duo of Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson, but injured an ankle in Week 2 and tried to play through it. He finished the year on injured reserve and had ankle surgery, ending the season with just 20 catches for 240 yards and one touchdown. He had more than three catches in a game just once last year — in the season opener — and Washington allowed Pryor to leave as a free agent. The former Ohio State quarterback-turned-receiver now has a chance to return to form as a potential deep threat for the Jets in new coordinator Jeremy Bates’ offense. This marks the latest stop in what has been a wild football journey for Pryor, who has also spent time with Oakland, Seattle, Kansas City and Cincinnati in the NFL.Pryor, a top high school recruit from southwestern Pennsylvania, was the starting quarterback for Ohio State from 2008-10 and became one of college football’s most exciting players. He threw for 6,177 yards and 57 touchdowns and ran for 2,164 yards and 17 scores in three seasons with the Buckeyes. But Pryor withdrew from Ohio State in June 2011 after a memorabilia-for-cash-and-tattoos scandal that resulted in a five-game suspension and ultimately led to coach Jim Tressel’s resignation. Two months later, Pryor was selected by Oakland in the NFL supplemental draft. He played in just four games during his first two seasons with the Raiders, including one start at quarterback. Pryor started nine games in 2013 with shaky results, throwing for two TDs and 11 interceptions before being benched in favor of Matt McGloin following a sprained knee ligament earlier in the season.Pryor was traded to Seattle before the 2014 NFL draft, but was among the Seahawks’ final cuts. He sat out the entire season despite having workouts with several teams. Kansas City signed him in January 2015, but then released him five months later. Pryor briefly joined Cincinnati, but was again cut — and then announced that he would be willing to play wide receiver on a full-time basis.Cleveland claimed Pryor off waivers and he played in three games for the Browns, who named him a starter at wide receiver the following season. Despite still being raw at the position, Pryor’s athleticism and versatility was on full display in 2016 as he led the Browns in receptions, yards receiving, TD catches, yards per game and yards per catch. In a game at Miami, he became the first player since Hall of Famer Frank Gifford of the Giants in 1959 to have at least 120 yards receiving (144), 30 yards passing (35) and 20 yards rushing (25) in a game. He also played a snap at safety and became the first player since San Francisco’s Billy Kilmer in 1964 to have three catches, carries and passes in a game. With the Jets, Pryor is reunited with two teammates from that Cleveland team: quarterback Josh McCown and running back Isaiah Crowell.Pryor parlayed his promising season with the Browns into a nice payday with the Redskins, and things started off well as he had six catches for 66 yards in the opener. But his production was inconsistent from that point before the ankle injury ended his season — and, it turned out, his tenure in Washington — after Week 11.___For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP_NFLlast_img read more

PGA Championship celebrates 100 as Tiger Woods goes for 15

first_imgIn this Aug. 15, 1999, file photo, Tiger Woods kisses the Wanamaker trophy after winning the 81st PGA Championship at the Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Ill. Woods tied for sixth at the British Open, and now goes to the PGA Championship with a chance to win his first major in 10 years. (AP Photo/Michael S. Green, File)The PGA Championship has all the trappings of a big celebration this year. Thanks to a Sunday afternoon on the other side of the Atlantic, it feels even bigger. This is the 100th edition of the only major championship restricted to professionals, and it’s a farewell to the muggy heat of summer. The PGA Championship is leaving its August date after some 40 years and moving to May. Jordan Spieth was always sure to get plenty of attention as he gets a second crack at trying to complete the career Grand Slam, a feat achieved by only five other players, never at the PGA Championship. And now Tiger Woods is in focus like never before.Just the sight of his name atop the leaderboard in the final round of the British Open, even if it was there alone for only about 30 minutes, was enough to turn cynics into cheerleaders. Woods has gone 10 years, five surgeries and one divorce since his last major. He started the year with uncertainty about his health and his swing. He reaches the final major without a victory, but with a game that suggests another trophy — even the biggest variety — might not be far off.He finished one shot behind at the Valspar Championship in March. He finished three shots behind at Carnoustie.“I think that I went from just hoping to be able to play the tour,” Woods said. “Now that I feel that I can the play the tour, I certainly can win again. I’ve had an opportunity to win a couple times this year. I had a great chance at Valspar early in the year, and even a week ago (at the British Open) I had a great shot at it. Yeah, my game has gotten better and good enough where I feel like I can win again.”The PGA Championship returns to Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri, and a victory for Woods would be his fifth Wanamaker Trophy, tying the record held by Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen, and his 15th major championship.Bellerive is a course Woods doesn’t know very well, and he’s not alone. It last hosted the PGA Championship in 1992 when Nick Price won the first of his three majors. Bellerive also was the site of the BMW Championship in 2008, which Woods missed while recovering from knee surgery. Only 13 players from that event are in the field for the PGA.Woods was last at Bellerive for the tournament it didn’t host — the American Express Championship in 2001, canceled because of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. That was the only time Woods played the course, a Tuesday practice round with Mark Calcavecchia in which a PGA Tour security official was filling him in on the attacks as he played. Woods drove 17 hours home to Florida by himself the next day.“Pretty much everything was a blur,” he said when asked about his recollections of the golf course.Justin Thomas is the defending champion and one of the few players who has seen Bellerive, back in June as part of his media promotion tour. Based on its spot on the schedule, the PGA Championship rarely allows time for players to get a preview. The British Open ended on July 22, and players like world No. 1 Dustin Johnson and U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka went straight to Canada, and then Ohio for a World Golf Championship. Woods was in Switzerland on a holiday.“I contemplated going over to Bellerive for a day and checking it out,” Rory McIlroy said. “But I told myself I’ve never done it before for a PGA and I’ve won it a couple times and I played well. So why would I change what I’ve always done.”Spieth was in Spain after the British Open for his bachelor’s party and said he would see Bellerive when he arrived on Monday. He has heard a little about it and said he expected “a normal PGA.”Just what is normal?“It’s like a long, narrow, you’ve still got to shoot 10 to 14 under type of thing,” Spieth said. “The PGA reminds me of a few tour stops, like Congressional, and maybe a little bit like Akron. It’s not as tricky, just really cool golf courses you’re only going to see once every 10 years. A long, difficult PGA Tour course with longer rough.”Bellerive already has been the scene of one career Grand Slam. That’s where Gary Player won the 1965 U.S. Open to become the fourth player to sweep the four professional majors. Spieth gets his second try. He won the British Open last summer, headed to Quail Hollow and could feel the attention on his bid to join the most elite group in golf. The feeling was fleeting. He was 11 shots behind going into the weekend and never got much closer. This year feels different, perhaps because expectations are lower. Spieth still hasn’t won a tournament since Royal Birkdale last summer. He lost a share of the 54-hole lead at Carnoustie two weeks ago, although he felt his game — especially the short game — finally rounding into form.“I played a better Sunday at the British Open this year than last year, minus a couple of holes,” he said, referring to his birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie stretch on the back nine when he won the claret jug in 2017. “I felt better about my game this year. I just didn’t end up with the trophy, and therefore, it doesn’t create the same buzz.”Spieth turned 25 last week. He is getting married this year. He is in no rush.“I’m more big picture,” he said. “This (PGA) course changes every year. At some point, I’m going to be in form on a course that is good for me and the stars will line up and I’ll have to executive coming the stretch. And it could be this year.”Otherwise, it will be in May. That will be the new month for the PGA Championship, which allows it to move to courses in the South, while shutting out venues like Whistling Straits in Wisconsin and Hazeltine in Minnesota. It no longer will be the fourth major on the schedule. The PGA of America hopes that its championship will get enough new energy that it won’t be considered the least of the four majors. Not everyone feels that way, least of all Thomas.“I’m perfectly content with grabbing my fourth of the four majors, if you will, every year,” Thomas said.Spieth might want it even more, considering what’s at stake. So, too, would Woods.last_img read more

Vermaelen prefers Man Utd over Barcelona

first_img Information in ‘The Sun’ said that Barça had diversified their targets, for the moment, because Paris Saint-Germain are not ready to talk about selling their Brazilian defender Marquinhos. Sport EN 27/07/2014 CEST The same outlet reported that the Arsenal player, 28, is ready to leave the Gunners this summer after falling down Arsene Wenger’s pecking order. Upd. at 20:17 One of the alternatives for the Catalan club was Vermaelen, who it now seems is keen to stay in England. Relegated to the bench at Arsenal, Thomas Vermaelen would like to leave the Emirates this season and fight for a starting berth somewhere else. That would mean that the Barcelona target would choose Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United rather than opt for a fresh start in Spain. However, according to reports in the British press, the Belgian defender would prefer to stay in the Premier League. Per Mertersacker and Laurent Koscielny are the club’s preferred central defenders.last_img read more

BEE tops SA companies’ agenda

first_img23 March 2006South African business owners report a 19 percentage point increase in the importance of black economic empowerment (BEE) in winning business, according to consulting firm Grant Thornton’s International Business Owners Survey 2006.According to Grant Thornton, 70% of South African business owners interviewed in the 2006 survey indicated that black empowerment was a key issue for them in winning business – up from 61% in 2005 and 51% in 2003.The annual survey tracks the trends and opinions of some 7 000 business owners in 30 countries. In South Africa, the survey was conducted by Research Surveys among 300 business owners employing between 50 and 250 staff. The survey indicates that business owner opinion on the importance of BEE is on the rise across all regions and business sectors in the country. In Gauteng, 73% of respondents reported that BEE was an issue in winning business, followed by 72% in Durban, 67% in Cape Town and 59% in East London and Port Elizabeth combined. In the construction sector, 91% of business owners indicated that their BEE status was having a significant impact on gaining new clients (up from 72% in 2005), followed by 69% of business owners in the retail sector (54% in 2005), 78% in the service industry (71% in 2005) and 56% in manufacturing (51% in 2005).When business owners were asked whether their business was aligned to any BEE charter or scorecard, 66% responded positively.More broad-based approachAccording to Grant Thornton, South African business owners also seem to be adopting a more broad-based approach to BEE, with 63% of respondents identifying skills development and 67% identifying employment equity as “very important” aspects of their BEE strategy. This compared with 53% for the ownership aspect of BEE, 49% for the management aspect and 46% for affirmative procurement.“It is encouraging that, increasingly, business owners are shifting their focus away from only addressing equity ownership as part of their BEE strategy and incorporating broad-based empowerment structures,” Grant Thornton’s Lee-Anne Bac said in a statement.“What these results reflect is that business owners are focusing on developing and grooming people to move up the ranks, which is in line with the whole BEE rationale.”In spite of this, Bac said, there was “still a misunderstanding that ownership is the only aspect of BEE, with mid-sized businesses still feeling pressure from their clients to comply with the ownership aspects of BEE scorecards.”SouthAfrica.info reporterlast_img read more

Tax Reform; Senate Bill Could Be Delayed

first_imgThe Senate Finance Committee (SFC) has been preparing to release its tax reform measure on November 9, according to several lawmakers. However, now the Senate bill could be delayed. The SFC may now hold its bill until the House Ways and Means Committee concludes its markup of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Bill (HR 1).Senate Bill Could Be Delayed On November 8, SFC members John Cornyn, R-Tex., and John Thune, R-S.D., both said that the committee’s tax reform proposals will be unveiled on November 9. It did not matter where the House was in its process. At press time, the House Ways and Means Committee was expected to finish its markup of HR 1 late on November 8 or on November 9.SFC Chairman’s MarkThe SFC Chairman’s Mark is expected to offer tax reform proposals that are significantly different than those in the House bill. For example, the SFC is expected to propose a 20-percent corporate tax rate, like HR 1. However, there are reports that the SFC will propose phasing in the rate cut over two to five years. In addition, the Senate bill is expected to be crafted so that it complies with the $1.5 trillion budget reconciliation. Moreover, this is required for Republicans to use Senate rules allowing for the bill’s passage with a simple majority vote. Currently, the House bill exceeds this threshold. According to several reports, other differences in the Senate’s bill could include:different individual income tax rates; anda total repeal of the state and local tax deduction.By Jessica Jeane, Wolters Kluwer News StaffCBO Estimated Deficits and Debt Under the Chairman’s Amendment in the Nature of a Substitute to HR 1, the Tax Cuts and Jobs ActCBO—Repealing the Individual Health Insurance Mandate: An Updated EstimateLogin to read more tax news on CCH® AnswerConnect or CCH® Intelliconnect®.Not a subscriber?
