Shoosmiths lets 86 go

first_imgNational firm Shoosmiths has responded to a difficult financial year by announcing a total of 86 redundancies. The top 40 firm, where turnover dropped by 3% in 2011/12 to £84m, today confirmed 71 voluntary and 15 compulsory redundancies following a two-month consultation. The firm announced in May that 93 roles were at risk as it restructured its consumer arm, primarily affecting the volume motor personal injury team based in Basingstoke. Private client practice group head David Palmer said: ‘It is very regrettable that we had to make redundancies as part of the restructuring. ‘This has been a difficult time, and those affected have conducted themselves with professionalism and dignity throughout the consultation process. We wish them well in the future.’ The firm, which reported profit per equity partner falling by 21% last year, has 113 partners and more than 1,200 staff at seven offices in England. It has not been confirmed which level of staff will be affected by the redundancies.last_img read more

Long drives galore, but putting the key

first_imgBest of the day was Jeff Wylie (7), just getting the better of Jonathan Pratt (10) on count back 16/14 after both signed for 34 points.  Near pins were spread around between Paddy, Jonathan & K.Thursday, Jan. 30, Bangpakong – StablefordThursday was a long drive, longer than normal anyway, before we got to the course at Bangpakong Riverside.  The course is in super condition currently, with fairways offering perfect lies, if you can manage to keep it on the straight & not so narrow. While I have difficulty with describing any course as “easy”, even at 6600 yards from the white tees, Bangpakong is certainly one of the more open, forgiving courses available to us.  This is not to say that it does not offer up its challenges, especially the par 3s which have some length and hazards to negotiate. With no Jonathan today, as he is visiting the UK, it was left to Willem Lasonder (20) to challenge Jeff for the prizes.  After good front 9s, both slipped a little on the back to sign for 36 & 38 points respectively.  George Gamble (24) was in the hunt, but a late stumble saw him relegated to equal third with Paddy, who even with a couple of “wipes” on the back 9 was not far away.Near pins went to Neil & Jeff.Note:  Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along.  Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days.  As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option.  Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries.  Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing! PSC golf from Siam Country ResortTuesday, Jan. 28, The Emerald – StablefordTuesday was a visit to Emerald where we played from the white tees, which were effectively yellow as they had not been replaced following a junior tournament.  Even at the normal whites at 6,024 yards, Emerald is amongst the shortest courses in the area, with some allowance for the up & down terrain.   The course was in generally good order, but is starting to show signs from the recent lack of rain of fairways being very firm, good for distance if you can keep it straight though.  Greens were putting truly, but hard to be offensive with downhill putts, as they had a tendency to get away if not careful.Jonathan Pratt – style personified. last_img read more

Finn Harps vs Galway United Preview

first_imgGalway United travel to Finn Park on Friday evening for an important early season league game against Finn Harps. Kick-off: 8.00pm. Galway United tackle Finn Harps this evening here is the official preview of the game from Galway United’s FC  official website Both sides have tasted defeat in their opening games of the 2017 SSE Airtricity League season. After last week’s 4-0 loss at Turners Cross, United make the long trip north to face Ollie Horgan’s side, who lost 5-3 against Bray Wanderers in their last league outing.Shane Keegan has been enthused by his players performances in the first half of both of the Tribemen’s openers, but he’s seeking a more complete performance at Finn Park on Friday evening.KEEGAN SEEKING UNITED CONSISTENCY AT FINN PARK“It’s been two games now in which we have done quite well in the first halves, but we haven’t been as good in the second.“I don’t think that has anything to do with our fitness levels, it’s our own approach and application that needs to improve and it needs to be delivered for 90 minutes.“Finn Harps are very good, they might be sitting on zero points, but so are we, and we would like to think we’re also a good side. I’ve seen their game against Bray, they were in it for long periods and caused Bray a lot of problems.“They’re more of a footballing side this year than they might’ve been considered to be in previous seasons. They’ve brought in some impressive players like Jonny Bonner and Ciaran O’Connor. They will be in a similar boat as ourselves, they’ll be looking at things and saying we’re not doing a huge amount wrong, we just need to do it for 90 minutes and tweak a few things.“We have to be at our best to take something from the game. If we don’t first and foremost match Finn Harps for fight, then we can have no expectation to take anything from the game. If we match them, then we can hope that different elements from our game will do enough for us to take points from the game. All of that only comes into account after we match them for fight, if we want to do well in the game.”ALEX BYRNE EXPECTS FINN PARK BATTLE“We’ve dropped off a bit in the second half of our opening games. In pre-season we showed that wasn’t an issue, it’s certainly not down to our fitness levels.“In pre-season, we outlasted teams if anything. We need to put in a solid first and second half performance on Friday and hopefully we can come away with our first win of the season.“We’re aware it’s going to be a tough battle. Finn Harps always put in a good shift, they’re not a bad side and they’ve made a few good additions, we know we’re going to have to get around the pitch and get after them and win the 50-50’s.“It’s not the best pitch, so we will need to win our battles and take it from there.”TEAM NEWSPaul Sinnott (ankle) is United’s only absentee.REFEREEPaul Tuite (Dublin)FORM GUIDEFinn Harps – LLGalway United – LLLAST LEAGUE MEETING1 October 2016 | Galway United 3-2 Finn HarpsGalway United goalscorers: Vinny Faherty.
